WHAT ARE PENSIONADO VISA REQUIREMENTS? The only requirement for applying pensionado visa, is to have a lifetime pension (income) of US$1,000. per month. Pensionado visa program is often called “PENSIONER VISA”, however this program is available to anyone older than 18 years of age.
WHAT IS THE PANAMA IMMIGRATION LAW? Panama laws require that applicants who wish to obtain pensioner visa, to hire a Panamanian attorney to represent them before the immigration office. Therefore, clients are required to sign a power of attorney, before a notary public in Panama.

WHAT TYPE OF DOCUMENTS REQUIRED WHEN APPLYING FOR PENSIONADO VISA? To obtain pensionado visa, the following two (2) documents are required.
- Pension confirmation letter: Retirees need to have a minimum pension (income) of $1,000. per month. For example, social security benefits, VA benefits, annuity or private pension income is acceptable.
2. Police report clearance confirming that the retiree had no prior criminal activities (FBI report for American citizens and RCMP report for Canadians is required)
NOTE A: All the documents must be apostilled in the homeland
NOTE B: All the documents must be translated to Spanish language by a certified translator in Panama.
NOTE C: American, Canadian and European citizens can travel to Panama without visa and are allowed to stay for a period of up to 180 days.
HOW TO APOSTILE YOUR DOCUMENTS? Panama requires all foreign documents such as police clearance report, pension benefit certificates, marriage certificates and birth certificates to be apostilled in the homeland before submitting for residency visa. There are 2 options for apostilling a document;
- Apostille Agency in your country
- Panama Consulate in your country
For example, if you are living in a country that has Apostille Agency, you may choose to apply for apostille of your documents through this agency.

HOW TO BECOME PERMANENT RESIDENT OF PANAMA? Pensionado visa residency process.
1. PROVISIONAL PENSIONADO VISA RESIDENCY
Upon your arrival in Panama, it is required to register your passport with the immigration office. Once you are affiliated with the immigration office, we compile all the required documents for submission. Upon approval, clients will be photographed and be granted temporary visa residency ID card that is valid for 6 months.
2. PERMANENT PENSIONADO VISA RESIDENCY
Within 4-6 months, immigration office processes your application for permanent residency visa, and once your application is approved, we would notify clients to fly to Panama again to be photographed and obtain their permanent residency visa ID card. Permanent residency ID card has no expiration, and applicants can reside in Panama indefinitely.
3. E- CEDULA ID CARD FROM TRIBUNAL ELECTORAL
Obtaining E-CEDULA is optional however we highly recommend applying for it as soon as you become permanent resident of Panama.

CAN YOU BRING YOUR FAMILY TO PANAMA? Yes. The Pensionado visa, friendly nations visa and investors visa allow applicants to bring their family to Panama and obtain permanent residency visa for them as well. Marriage certificate and birth certificate of children must be duly authenticated by apostille seal before submitting to the immigration office. For your spouse or minor children, your minimum income must be increased by US$250.00 per month per dependent.
CAN YOU GET PERMANENT RESIDENCY IN PANAMA? The Immigration office initially grants temporary visa to retirees and after about 4-6 months, our attorneys would obtain permanent residency visa for clients.
CAN YOU PROCESS PENSIONER VISA REMOTELY? NO. YOU MUST BE IN PANAMA. All applicants who wish to receive their pensionado visa must travel to Panama and physically appear at the Panama immigration office.
WHAT DOCUMENTS REQUIRED IF YOU HAVE A PRIVATE PENSION? If you are receiving pension from a private company, it is required to submit the following documents.
- Pension letter confirmation from the private company (TO BE APOSTILLED)
- Certificate of good standing of the private company from the government agency where the company is incorporated
- 6 months bank statements indicating your pension payments
WHAT IF YOUR PENSION IS NOT IN US DOLLAR? In this case, we need currency conversion certificate from Banco Nacional de Panama certifying the equivalent amount of your pension in U.S. Dollars.
CAN YOU RESIDE IN OTHER COUNTRY WITH PENSIONADO VISA? Yes, Pensioner visa allows retirees to remain in Panama indefinitely, however if you are not residing in Panama, we recommend that you visit Panama, at least, every 2 years to avoid the revocation of your permanent residency.
